The History of the Boomerang

The throwstick, an aerodynamic hunting weapon and ancestor of the Boomerang, has been around for a very long time. Evidence has been found that were used by Stone Age people all around the world as long as 15,000 years ago.

Those people known to have used them include the Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Goths, the Hopi indians and, of course the Australian Aborigines. They have also been found in the Urals, Northern and Southern Africa, the Assyrian and Babylonian regions of the near East, in India and in the American South-West.

In Mexico the throwstick, used for hunting hares, was treated as a weapon of the Gods.

The returning boomerang was not known in all the regions where the throwstick was used, but it is thought they were developed in several areas including, possibly, South Western America and India.

The throwstick was a heavy, aerodynamic but non-returning weapon that was thrown horizontally to kill or stub prey. It seems likely that the vertically thrown returning boomerang was a (perhaps accidental) developement of this weapon. As many childrens toys are small versions of adult tools, this may also have been a factor in the production of the returning boomerang.
